Thank you to all who participated in helping the CLC Writing Center celebrate National Day on Writing last Monday, Oct. 20! We had about 70 people in total, including students, staff, and faculty, who came out to share why they write with us. Some students and faculty wrote poems using magnetic poetry, and others had a blast with our giant, pencil-shaped word search!
We also want to shout out our social media blitz and raffle winners, too! A special thank you and congrats to the following: Daniel Killins, Jose Zavaleta de Lopez, Diego Martinez, and Lucas Liu!
We are incredibly thankful to the CLC community who participated and helped make National Day on Writing a special day at CLC. We’re extra grateful to Nick Schevera, Nick Bennett, Sadie Saller, and Miguel Jimenez who donated their time and tabled with us. We’re also thankful to Ann Rintz who let us borrow one of the art gallery’s folding displays during our event.
Please enjoy the slideshow below, and we’ll see you next October 20th!
On Wednesday, June 18, the Writing Center hosted separate events at the Southlake and Lakeshore campuses to provide fun opportunities for Adult Ed. students to stretch their English-speaking skills.
This is part three of our series where the peer tutors who attended the DePaul Writing Center’s dinner party on Friday, February 21, 2025 reflect on their experience. Keep reading below to learn more about peer tutor Jasmine’s experience.

I was very fortunate to be able to attend the Chicago Writing Centers Dinner Party at the University of DePaul. At this event there were many other tutors from schools like Lewis University, University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), North Park University, Loyola University, and DePaul University.
The event started with an activity named Tutor Bingo where we were given a sheet with boxes that had personality traits, and we had to find someone from a different school other than our own to sign their name on that trait. This activity was more like a game since there was a prize if you filled out every box (I won a prize). The game gave us the chance to warm up to each other in a fun and competitive way while meeting and conversing with tutors from all of those other schools. I had even more of a chance to conversate with tutors who sat at my table. These tutors were from the schools Lewis University, UIC, and Depaul.

The Chicagoland Writing Center Dinner Party was an incredible opportunity to connect with tutors from universities across the Chicago area. College of Lake County was the only community college at the event, and this gave us a unique chance to engage in rich conversations with peers from four-year institutions and compare our experiences. I felt truly privileged to be surrounded by such skilled writers, and the casual, relaxed environment allowed us to discuss our work openly and learn from each other.
The folks over at the DePaul Writing Center (Susie’s old stomping grounds) recently hosted a dinner party for peer and professional writing tutors in the Chicagoland area. Dr. Staben, the Writing Faculty Coordinator, and three of our new peer tutors had the privilege of attending the event and being the only ones representing a community college at the event. Keep on reading below to learn more about peer tutor Noelle’s experience.

The Chicagoland Writing Center Dinner Party was an inviting and casual way to meet writers, tutors, and teachers from several universities in the area. The College of Lake County representatives were the only community college attendees, and comparing our work to that of four-year university writing centers brought valuable insight into a longstanding, complex conversation.
The CLC Writing Center celebrated International Writing Centers Week this past February 10th through the 15th. This annual event was created by the International Writing Centers Association in 2006 to celebrate writing and to spread awareness about the important roles that writing centers play in schools, on college campuses, and within the greater community.
We celebrated by hosting a tabling event at the Grayslake Campus on Monday, February 10, where we had handouts for students to fill out. Prompts included “What writing advice would you give new students at CLC?” and “Who or what inspires you to write?” We also had writing center-themed word searches for participants to enjoy.
We hosted a week-long ‘work with a writing tutor raffle’ at all three campuses. We had a total of 102 students visit the Tutoring Center. They worked with our writing tutors in-person and online on things like college transfer essays, assignments for CMM, ENG, and other courses at CLC, and attended Conversation Circles! Our three winners included a student who attended Conversation Circle at the Southlake Campus, a student who worked with a tutor in-person at the Grayslake Campus, and a student who submitted their work for written feedback.
We’re eternally thankful to all the students, staff, and faculty who helped promote and participate in International Writing Centers Week this year, and we’re excited to come up with more activities for the CLC community next year!

The CLC Writing Center wrapped up another successful round of Night Against Procrastination events on 11/19/24 and 11/20/24 🥳🎊
Collectively among the three campuses, we had 36 participants: 32 students, 2 community members, 1 staff, and 1 faculty member. Of the 32 student participants, 16 were new students who hadn’t been to the tutoring/writing center during this semester 🎉🙌🏻 Hopefully we see them around the center before the end of Fall 2024. 🤭
The CLC Writing Center wrapped up a week of celebrating National Day on Writing (Oct. 20) on Saturday October, 26th.
To celebrate, we hosted tabling events at all three campuses on 10/21 where students, staff, and faculty filled out fliers letting us know why they write. You can see some of their responses in the slideshow below. We also shared information about upcoming events at the college and new classes for the Spring 25 semester.
Conversation Circles started up again last week! Sessions were held at the Grayslake, Lakeshore, and Southlake campuses on Monday and Tuesday, and were well attended by CLC’s ALE, ELI, and ESL students.
Conversation Circles are a weekly event sponsored by the CLC Writing Center, the ELI, and the ESL Departments. The goal is to provide a space where English language learners (from all backgrounds and proficiencies) can practice their English speaking and listening skills in a low-stakes environment. These sessions are hosted by writing center staff at all three CLC locations.
Happy fall semester all! My name is Susie Mendez, and I’m the new(-ish) Writing Coordinator in the Tutoring Center. I’ve been in this role since February 2024. I want to take the time at the start of the new semester and school year to introduce myself to you all.
I am a CLC native; I went straight to CLC out of high school because I knew I wanted to get a degree in something, but I didn’t know what that was straight out of high school. I knew CLC was a good place for me to feel things out. I initially signed up to pursue a career in mortuary sciences, but I quickly changed career paths after taking my first creative writing course. At the end of the semester, my instructor recommended the whole class to apply to be writing tutors, and that one decision changed the course of my education and career for the better.
