Reflecting on International Writing Centers Week 2025

The CLC Writing Center celebrated International Writing Centers Week this past February 10th through the 15th. This annual event was created by the International Writing Centers Association in 2006 to celebrate writing and to spread awareness about the important roles that writing centers play in schools, on college campuses, and within the greater community.

We celebrated by hosting a tabling event at the Grayslake Campus on Monday, February 10, where we had handouts for students to fill out. Prompts included “What writing advice would you give new students at CLC?” and “Who or what inspires you to write?” We also had writing center-themed word searches for participants to enjoy.

We hosted a week-long ‘work with a writing tutor raffle’ at all three campuses. We had a total of 102 students visit the Tutoring Center. They worked with our writing tutors in-person and online on things like college transfer essays, assignments for CMM, ENG, and other courses at CLC, and attended Conversation Circles! Our three winners included a student who attended Conversation Circle at the Southlake Campus, a student who worked with a tutor in-person at the Grayslake Campus, and a student who submitted their work for written feedback.

We’re eternally thankful to all the students, staff, and faculty who helped promote and participate in International Writing Centers Week this year, and we’re excited to come up with more activities for the CLC community next year!

National Day on Writing – It’s a Wrap!

The CLC Writing Center wrapped up a week of celebrating National Day on Writing (Oct. 20) on Saturday October, 26th.

To celebrate, we hosted tabling events at all three campuses on 10/21 where students, staff, and faculty filled out fliers letting us know why they write. You can see some of their responses in the slideshow below. We also shared information about upcoming events at the college and new classes for the Spring 25 semester.

Conversation Circles are (so) back!

Conversation Circles started up again last week! Sessions were held at the Grayslake, Lakeshore, and Southlake campuses on Monday and Tuesday, and were well attended by CLC’s ALE, ELI, and ESL students.

Conversation Circles are a weekly event sponsored by the CLC Writing Center, the ELI, and the ESL Departments. The goal is to provide a space where English language learners (from all backgrounds and proficiencies) can practice their English speaking and listening skills in a low-stakes environment. These sessions are hosted by writing center staff at all three CLC locations.

Hello (again!)

Happy fall semester all! My name is Susie Mendez, and I’m the new(-ish) Writing Coordinator in the Tutoring Center. I’ve been in this role since February 2024. I want to take the time at the start of the new semester and school year to introduce myself to you all.

I am a CLC native; I went straight to CLC out of high school because I knew I wanted to get a degree in something, but I didn’t know what that was straight out of high school. I knew CLC was a good place for me to feel things out. I initially signed up to pursue a career in mortuary sciences, but I quickly changed career paths after taking my first creative writing course. At the end of the semester, my instructor recommended the whole class to apply to be writing tutors, and that one decision changed the course of my education and career for the better.
