MWCA 2020 Revisited or the Moment Before the World Changed

By:  Dr. Jenny Staben, Faculty Coordinator, CLC Writing Center

On March 11, 2020, two SUVs with nine CLC peer writing tutors and me left from the parking lot of CLC’s Grayslake Campus to head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the 2020 Midwest Writing Centers Association (MWCA) conference.  One professional CLC tutor planned to drive down the next day.

I wasn’t just involved as a participant with my staff. As the MWCA Board Vice Chair, I had been part of the planning committee for the last year and a half.  Also, Jess Cole, a longtime peer tutor in our writing center, had designed the conference logo, which was featured on both the conference website and the program.

Before we even left Illinois, the specter of Covid had been taking its toll on the conference.  At the beginning of the week, the MWCA Board had discussed cancelling the event due to Covid concerns, but logistical issues prevented us from doing so. Over the next few days, a number of participants as well as several MWCA board members had to pull out, many because their universities had issued a ban on any off-campus travel earlier in the week.  Three CLC tutors who had planned to come changed their mind and stayed home for health reasons.

CLC Tutors Participate in Virtual Writing Center Conference

On February 25th and 26th, members of the CLC Writing Center staff took part in the Midwest Writing Centers Association (MWCA) 2021 virtual conference, “Creating Common Ground: Crosstalk and Community in the Writing Center.”

This conference was a reboot of the three-day event that had been scheduled to take place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in March 2020.  CLC writing tutors actually travelled to Iowa and took part in pre-conference workshops before the decision was made by MWCA to cancel the full conference.

Night Against Procrastination Virtual Write-In Recap

This fall the CLC Writing Center once again held our Night Against Procrastination Write-In event online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The event spanned two nights, Wednesday, December 2, 2020 and Thursday, December 3, 2020 going from 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm each night.

This time, we focused heavily on the “write-in” aspect, students committing to spend a certain amount of time writing, and referred writers who needed assistance directly to the writing center, which thanks to extended hours, was also open until 10:00 pm.

Night Against Procrastination – Virtual Write-In

Got writing deadlines looming? Got essays needing revision? Are you trying to finish your final research project in any CLC class?

Getting writing done can be hard in the best of times.  The Covid-19 pandemic has made it even more challenging to sit down in front of the computer and focus.  We know.

The CLC Writing Center team is here to help with a two-day Virtual Write-In.

What’s a Write-In?

A Write-In is a community event where writers join together to get writing done—whether it’s for an hour or two hours or ten—and help to keep each other accountable.  The idea is that when you are working with a group of fellow writers, it is easier to fight procrastination and keep your butt in your chair and your hands on the keyboard.

We are joining writing centers from across the United States and abroad to offer space and support to encourage writers to tackle (and not procrastinate on) end-of-semester writing projects.   Our virtual CLC Write-In is open to any CLC students, staff, or faculty who want to make progress on a writing task and is being offered over two days.
