Conversation Circles are (so) back!

Conversation Circles started up again last week! Sessions were held at the Grayslake, Lakeshore, and Southlake campuses on Monday and Tuesday, and were well attended by CLC’s ALE, ELI, and ESL students.

Conversation Circles are a weekly event sponsored by the CLC Writing Center, the ELI, and the ESL Departments. The goal is to provide a space where English language learners (from all backgrounds and proficiencies) can practice their English speaking and listening skills in a low-stakes environment. These sessions are hosted by writing center staff at all three CLC locations.

Hello (again!)

Happy fall semester all! My name is Susie Mendez, and I’m the new(-ish) Writing Coordinator in the Tutoring Center. I’ve been in this role since February 2024. I want to take the time at the start of the new semester and school year to introduce myself to you all.

I am a CLC native; I went straight to CLC out of high school because I knew I wanted to get a degree in something, but I didn’t know what that was straight out of high school. I knew CLC was a good place for me to feel things out. I initially signed up to pursue a career in mortuary sciences, but I quickly changed career paths after taking my first creative writing course. Game Day for English Language Learners

On Wednesday, June 12, the CLC Writing Center hosted its first ever ESL Game Day event at the Southlake Campus. Three teams of students competed against each other in a game of Scattergories. The nine participants enjoyed snacks and the opportunity to practice their conversational skills and stretch their working vocabularies.

The event was a fun way to augment our ESL Conversation Circles offered in the fall and spring semesters. We hope to host more ESL Game Days in the future, expanding to the other campuses and trying a variety of language-based games.

Night (and Afternoon) Against Procrastination

On Thursday, December 1, 2022, the CLC Writing Center hosted a successful write-in event to help students (and CLC faculty and staff) fight procrastination.

Three separate write-in events were scheduled–one on each campus and writers had the opportunity to work for anywhere from two to four hours. Snacks were provided and door prizes were awarded.

Please meet four of our new tutors as well as our the new Tutoring Coordinator for the Writing Center.
