Reflecting on International Writing Centers Week 2025

The CLC Writing Center celebrated International Writing Centers Week this past February 10th through the 15th. This annual event was created by the International Writing Centers Association in 2006 to celebrate writing and to spread awareness about the important roles that writing centers play in schools, on college campuses, and within the greater community.

We celebrated by hosting a tabling event at the Grayslake Campus on Monday, February 10, where we had handouts for students to fill out. Prompts included “What writing advice would you give new students at CLC?” and “Who or what inspires you to write?” We also had writing center-themed word searches for participants to enjoy.

We hosted a week-long ‘work with a writing tutor raffle’ at all three campuses. We had a total of 102 students visit the Tutoring Center. They worked with our writing tutors in-person and online on things like college transfer essays, assignments for CMM, ENG, and other courses at CLC, and attended Conversation Circles! Our three winners included a student who attended Conversation Circle at the Southlake Campus, a student who worked with a tutor in-person at the Grayslake Campus, and a student who submitted their work for written feedback.

We’re eternally thankful to all the students, staff, and faculty who helped promote and participate in International Writing Centers Week this year, and we’re excited to come up with more activities for the CLC community next year!

Scenes from International Writing Centers Week 2020

The College of Lake County Writing Center organized a number of events to commemorate International Writing Centers Week, February 10 – 15, 2020.  This week was created by the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) back in 2016 to promote the work of writing centers and writing center tutors.

CLC writing tutors staffed promotional tables on Student Street on the Monday and Tuesday of IWC Week—handing out information about the writing center and upcoming events like the Night against Procrastination as well as raffle tickets. On Monday of IWC Week, the theme was “Share your Favorite Song Lyric or Quote” to get a raffle ticket while to earn a raffle ticket on Tuesday, students were encouraged to write the name of someone who inspired them on a heart, which tutors then posted on a display behind the table.

See below for pictures from both days.

Finally, at the beginning of the week, the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) sent out a call to its member to share their writing center stories:

Tomorrow (February 11th) marks the start of International Writing Centers Week 2019!  To celebrate, we’d like to share stories that celebrate the diversity and joy of writing center experience(s). We hope to highlight several stories every day through the end of the week. Please follow this link to share your story with us

A number of our writing center staff responded to this request and out of the nine tutors selected to share their experiences, three of them were staff at College of Lake County. These wonderful #MyWCStories were a great way for us to end International Writing Centers Week.
